About Us
Mission
Fauna Rescue's mission is to provide Rescue, Sanctuary and Medical services to parrots and other animals in need. We provide education to current and potential owners on the commitment, complexity, and care required for companion parrots to help reduce future problems. In addition, we provide services and programs to further support the physical and psychological needs of these wild birds.
Philosophy
We do not breed or sell animals. We oppose the sale of all animals through pet store chains, bird marts, and the Internet. We oppose the breeding of wild birds as companion pets as long as there are animals in need of homes.
Although Fauna Rescue focuses primarily on the avian community, we work with other animal groups to provide a larger network of resources and referral services such as:
- Helping groups transport animals from shelters to permanent homes
- Arranging for another rescue group to save a pet goat from slaughter in Texas
- Providing veterinary care for a cat that was attacked by dogs and lost her leg
- Saving a ten year-old dog from euthanasia because his owners were moving
- Coordinating a 1500 mile transport for a dog that was surrendered to a high-kill shelter because his owner was deployed to Iraq
History
In 1996, Linda Wisner founded Fauna Rescue to help protect companion parrots by providing a refuse for homeless parrots. Fauna Rescue is currently caring for over 45 birds. Only a small percentage of these birds are placeable, and the rest are permanent residents that need a permanent sanctuary.
In 2000, Fauna Rescue received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status with the State of New Hampshire and the Federal Government. Federal ID# 02-0519442. NH State Registration # 13076
In March 2003, Fauna opened an office at 48 Bridge Street in Nashua. This office is the operating center for our volunteers. A 2000 square foot facility was rented in November 2005. The birds finally moved in to their first "official" facility in January 2006.
A twenty-two acre parcel was acquired in September 2006. This land is to be used for the permanent sanctuary, "Mountain of the Bird".
During the summer of 2008 we finally laid out where the main bird building will be, the flights, parking lot, visitors center and student housing will be. The main area for Phase One has been flagged and is ready for logging this winter.
This facility will be designed with GREEN in mind. For the health of our residents, volunteers and the planet, our goal is to be as close to 100% green in building and living. We will be utilizing solar and wind for all our electrical needs and plan future greenhouses to grow some of the fresh vegetables and fruits to fulfill our residents needs. Our buildings will be designed and built with renewable and non-hazardous materials.
Plans for fund-raising for Phase One are going on at present. We hope to start breaking ground in Spring of 2009 as our intent is to move in by November 2010.
